Constantinople (Greek: Κωνσταντινούπολις, Latin: Constantinopolis, Turkish: Istanbul) was the imperial capital of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine/Eastern Roman Empire, the Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Throughout most of the Middle Ages, Constantinople was Europe's largest[1] and wealthiest city.
Constantinople as the name of the city was officially dropped in favour of the Turkish name Istanbul in 1930[2][3] with the Turkish Postal Service Law, as part of Atatürk's national reforms.[4][5] This name in turn derives from the Greek and Slavic colloquial name Stambol; see Names of Istanbul for fuller discussion.
